Hogs Set To Roar Into Dunedin

An estimated $11.5 million worth of Harley-Davidson motorcycles will be seen and heard around Dunedin this month when the 10th New Zealand HOG Rally takes place.

It expected that around 500 Harley-Davidson motorcycles and riders will gather for the rally. In total about 800 people are likely to be registered for the Dunedin event.

The HOG rally takes place on November 26 - 27 & 28. The rally will be officially opened by Peggy Lamb and Nigel Villiers from HOG International in the United States.

Harley owners will be mostly under canvas at Whare Flat scout camp near Dunedin in a secure area which will be off limits to the public.

However, the public will be able to see a full display of the motorcycles when they take part in a mass Thunder Ride from 11 am on Saturday. Dunedin\'s Octagon will be blocked off especially for the event.

HOG, which stands for Harley Owners Group, is the largest motorcycle organisation in the world with 465,000 members. In order to qualify, a member needs to own a Harley and register with HOG international in the U.S.

There are 1,200 members in New Zealand with most belonging to one of the six chapters, with the remainder belonging as international members.

HOG Rally organiser, Theo Marlow, says the rally has taken on an even greater significance for Harley owners this year with the rally celebrating its tenth anniversary in New Zealand.

Harley-Davidson owners are passionate about their motorcycles, and they relish the chance to gather for the HOG Rally, he says.

The HOG Rally gets underway on Friday the 27th of November with registrations. It\'s expected that many of the members will take part in organised rides throughout the Otago Peninsula on the first day.

The main focus for Saturday will be the Thunder Ride from Whare Flat through to central city Dunedin. Sunday will see the Harley riders disperse back throughout New Zealand.

There will be HOG members from all over New Zealand heading to Dunedin, and it is likely we will have some from Australia and the U.S. also coming with their motorcycles, says Theo Marlow.
