Posted: Sun 11 Mar 2007

Young Australian Scott Charlton took his Bernard Racing Yamaha R1 to a fantastic win in the Superbike TT at Round Five of the SsangYong New Zealand Superbike Road Race Championships at Pukekohe Park, south of Auckland today, 11 March 2007.

The Superbike championship came down to the very last race. Bugden had taken a three-point lead into the race, after winning race one. Stroud need to finish in front of Bugden, to retain his title, but the battle was between Charlton and Bugden, with Stroud third.

Charlton took the win, the New Zealand Superbike TT and the Geoff Perry Memorial, with his second Bugden clinched the Championship. So for the first time the New Zealand Superbike title goes to an Australian.

The 600 Sports Production was just as electric, with 19-year-old Sam Smith from Pukekohe, taking his Tecnam Yamaha R6 to both the TT title and the Championship with Charlton in hot pursuit. Smith took the TT by just half a wheel.

In the other classes a different rider won the TT tile to the one who won the Championship.

The Formula Three TT went to New Plymouth’s Terry Fitzgerald (Suzuki), while Oamaru’s Andy Bolwell (Kawasaki) took the Championship.

15-year-old Australian Jackson Leigh –Smith (Honda) took the TT title, while Christchurch’s Cameron Horgan the Championship.

Wanganui’s Stephen Bron/ Dion Weedon took their LCR to the TT win with Taupo’s Andy Scrivener/ Steve Bryan the Championship.
