Reardon blitzes the field in Avalon

Reigning Australian Supercross Champion Daniel Reardon has sent a clear message to those hoping to steal his crown by blitzing the Pro-Open field at the second round of the 2007 Championship at Avalon Raceway.

Having lucked out in the final of the opening round, Kawasaki's Reardon bounced back with a near flawless display to take maximum points from KTM's Jay Marmont and American Honda rider Josh Demouth.

In what was a hotly contested final, Reardon, Marmont, Demouth and Yamaha's Cheyne Boyd all laid their claims for the Avalon crown.

After settling into second position, Boyd made an uncharacteristic mistake at the half-way mark of the race, sending him back in the field from which point he failed to make a serious impact.

It was Reardon who made the impact however, with a sensational move to jump from third place into the lead – a position which he never relinquished.

In fact, once in the lead, Reardon proved his pre-race statement of being the fastest rider in the field true, when he put on a show and opened up a big gap to his nearest rival.

After the race, Reardon admitted he was pleased with his weekend's work, and was happy to get a round-win earlier, rather than later in the series.

"I am just glad that I did it – I felt that I should have done it in the first round, but you can't go fast when you are lying on the ground," he said.

"This weekend was pretty good – I made a few mistakes and my fitness was pretty good, but I just lacked a little concentration and that caught up with me over a few laps, but I guess you can't do better than a win."

Reardon also revealed that he does not take so much of an interest in his opponents' results – he believes that if he simply performs at his peak, he will have no trouble retaining his title.

"I just worry about myself – I wouldn't have a clue where all the other guys finish as it doesn't really bother me. I'm doing a job and as long as I am out there and riding well then that's the main thing."

Marmont was also happy with his performance in coming second, and admitted that he has some solid work ahead given that he is right in championship contention.

"It was fair racing – the racing was good and there were four or five of us battling for it over the first few laps," he said.

"I made a few mistakes at about lap six and lost my flow for a few laps which cost me a little bit because I let Daniel get a way from me a little bit too much.

"It was a good night, I got some valuable championship points and still very much in the championship hunt, so I'll go home and practise a few more things to try and get faster and faster for the next two races coming up."

Third placed Demouth bounced back from a horrid weekend at the opening round in Adelaide, with a dais performance that raised more than a few eyebrows.

"I was a little busted up coming into Adelaide and the first round with a dislocated shoulder three days before the race which meant I just didn't have a good weekend and was struggling," he said.

"This weekend though was a good one – I got to test with the Honda guys and felt really good all weekend long."

The third round of the 2007 Australian Supercross Championship will take place in Rosedale, Victoria on March 10.
