NZMX: Holeshot Gillard

Posted: Tue 13 Sep 2005

[KTM Press Release]

Race 1 - after Michael Cotter and Blake led for the first three laps but it fell apart when they came upon a crash and left the track to avoid their own dramas. He finished 5th. Tommy Maddams broke an ankle in the start of that race.

Race 2 - he won the holeshot with a drag race into the second corner with Justin McDonald hard sideways resulting in 6 riders going down. Blake avoided the 'melee' by going over the berm with both feet off the pegs. He recovered to finish 5th.

Race 3 - another holeshot and led for a lap and a half before the horsepower and skill of Cody and Scott took over. Blake commented that one minute they were there and the next minute they were gone. Blake finished 3rd reulting in a podium finish of 3rd for the Round.

Whilst 5th in the 1st Race he was only 23 seconds behind Cody who was only 6 in front of Scott Columb. In Race 3 he was 3rd but was 39 seconds behind Cody. Because of the late start to the day due to fog everything was running late so when the presentations took place they had already departed to catch the plane home. That now gives him an overall 3rd in the Championship 6 points ahead of Barry Morris.

To put it in perspective it has to be remembered Blake is only 17 whereas Cody and Scott are around 22-23. 5 years is a long time in motocross. Both are salaried, professional 'factory riders'. Cody (Honda) rides almost every day with Shayne King. Scott (Suzuki) has competed this year in the British Champs and the Australian Champs.

In the 250cc Luke Burkhart had a very good day with 2 wins and a second.

In the 500cc there is no race breakout but I note Corrie Sargent is now 1 point ahead of Peter Broxholme
