CASTROL HONDA RED RIDERS - Press Release:
Cody Cooper (Opotiki) and Corrie Sargent (Wellington) called on every bit of their experience and all of their Honda CRF250’s speed and reliability to take a come from behind win at last weekend’s Suzuki 6-hour Enduro: in the Hawkes Bay.
In front of a small but enthusiastic crowd of supporters and locals, the Honda pair had a poor start and were forced to ride mid pack for the first hour as the large and quality field of135 riders got familiar with the course. "I hooked my leg on the rear guard in the rush to get on the bike and lost some time" commented Cooper, "Then my goggles were smashed by a rock so it was difficult to move up in the first lap"
Overcast conditions that bought rain, a slippery track, and hot sun also tested all the riders’ skills.
With many riders tiring as the course took its toll, Cooper and Sargent called on their race fitness to work their way through the field, and with 4 laps remaining were 2 minutes adrift of the leaders.
"Every lap had a close call or bit of drama, but that’s what makes this type of racing so exciting" said Sargent.
Another crash let the leaders out of sight, but with the CRF250 performing faultlessly Cooper took the lead on the second to last lap, handing over to Sargent who eventually won by a safe margin of nearly 3 minutes
"Our fitness and preparation really showed through today" said Sargent "The race was a huge amount of fun, and we rode ourselves into it. The support we both get from Honda as team riders really makes a difference, so it’s great to showcase what the CRF250 is capable of."
Cooper was also pleased to be part of the winning pair on his third attempt at the race. "This year everything went well, and the bike was faultless for the full 6 hours, it’s a great testimony to the course and to Honda" he said. "Suzuki has won for the last 5 years, so it’s great that a Honda team were the first to break the winning streak"
