FROM THE DESK OF THE MNZ CEO:
This is my second newsletter, it covers the week ending 19 July 2002
What has been happening?
ACC.
This week I spent a day on the Motorcycle Reference Group, a consultative panel that ACC uses. Up until now the group has been totally about road users. I asked the ACC to include me from the sports point of view.
The group is a mixture of Government Agencies (LTSA. ACC, Police), Industry Reps, trainers, experts and recreational clubs. The objective of the group is to advise on prevention of motorcycle accidents.
Although the focus is on road users many of the issues are very relevant to the sporting sector and there would be many people who would be in both camps.
They talked extensively about the "born again rider" This is a demographic term for baby boomers coming back into motorcycling- this time with a bit of money behind them. They cause a large "blip" in the injury statistics
Riding in groups was discussed and is known to heighten the risk of accidents
Training
ACC has just funded the training of 48 Police motorcycle crash investigators
Here is food for thought.
The total cost of onroad motorcycle entitlement claims is $33.3m per annum. There are 59,000 registered motorcycles in NZ. The injury cost per motorcycle is almost $625 per annum.
SPARC:
Whilst I was in Wellington I took the opportunity to visit SPARC (The Hillary Commission and The Sports Foundation in the old money). It was mainly a relationship building exercise but I did leave them with our High Performance Plan to have a look at.
Licensing:
The office is working through the processing side of things. At this time of year processing takes about 10 days. If you have applied and need clearance for an event we can fax it through.
I am alarmed at the number of people who put cash in the mail. It is very risky.
Current Issues
Companies’ Office;
I have written to all clubs who have been or are about to be struck off the list. These are the ones we know about but there maybe more. You can check if your club is up to date by going to this site www.companies.govt.nz and doing a search. It helps if you know your number but you can search alphabetically.
The sample constitution I mentioned last week is on this website under The Rule Book tab/ APP Sample Constitution you can download a "just add water" constitution. The Sports Law Manual gives some good background; it is also under Rule Book.
Club Spotlight.
Each week I would like to spotlight a different club in this newsletter. It will only be a paragraph. Send an email to me and I will mention one club each week. trevor@motorcyclingnz.co.nz
Next Week.
I am spending two days at an International Events Seminar in Auckland. MNZ is in the international events business, I have to advertise that and get us known as an organisation that brings in good events and the revenue that goes with it.
Until next time
